  • Description

THERE ARE FEW CORNERS OF THE WORLD TODAY THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN SUBJECT TO THE MODERN IMPRINT OF MAN AND HIS EQUIPMENT: NO TELEPHONE, RADIO, TELEVISION, MOTOR CARS OR EVEN INDUSTRY. ONE SUCH PLACE IN EXISTENCE, HOWEVER, IS THE ISLAND OF SOCOTRA.

THE 2,400 SQUARE MILES OF SOCOTRA RISE IN A 5,000 FT HIGH VOLCANIC PILE OUT OF THE ARABIAN SEA, A GEOGRAPHICAL CONFLUENT OF THE NORTH-EAST AND SOUTH-WEST MONSOONS THAT ANNUALLY RAVAGE THE AREA, SOME 600 MILES (960 KILOMETRES) EAST OF ADEN.

IT IS HERE THAT A BRITISH JOINT SERVICES EXPEDITION OF ARMY AND AIR FORCE PERSONNEL IS CARRYING OUT A TWO-MONTH SURVEY OF THE ISLAND'S TOPOGRAPHY, ITS ANIMAL AND PLANT LIFE. THE 14-STRONG EXPEDITIONARY UNIT ARRIVED ON THE ISLAND ON DECEMBER 6.

THE PROSPECT OF SPENDING CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR IN SUCH A REMOTE AND ISOLATED ISLAND IN ONE WHICH APPEALS TO THE MEN WHO VOLUNTEERED TO JOIN THE EXPEDITION.

SOCOTRA IS KNOWN TO THE SULTANATE-ADMINISTERED ARABS AS THE DRAGON'S BLOOD ISLE BECAUSE OF THE RED SAP OF A CERTAIN TREE.

ITS GEOGRAPHICAL, BOTANIC AND OTHER SCIENTIFIC VALUES ASIDE, SOCOTRA CONTAINS A WEALTH OF INTEREST FOR THE HISTORIAN AND ARCHAEOLOGIST. THE ISLAND HAS SOME INTERESTING STONEWORK REMAINS WHICH DATE BACK TO 1506, THE PERIOD OF THE PORTUGUESE GARRISON SITUATED AT SUK, IN THE NORTH, WHICH WAS THEN THE ISLAND'S CAPITAL. THE BRITISH EXPEDITION'S BASE CAMP, TODAY, IS ONLY A FEW MILES WEST OF SUK ALONG THE NORTHERN COASTLINE OVER WHICH THE HAGGIER MOUNTAIN RANGE LOOMS FORBIDDINGLY A FEW MILES INLAND.

WEATHER CONDITIONS ON THE ISLAND ARE GOOD WITH FINE, BRIGHT MORNINGS GIVING WAY TO CLOUD AND A FEW MINUTES RAIN BETWEEN 10 AD 11 AM, AFTER WHICH THE BLUE SKIES RE-APPEAR.

THE EXPEDITION IS RECEIVING ASSISTANCE AND COURTESY FROM THE ISLANDERS; NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE HIRE OF ANIMAL TRANSPORT AND GUIDES ARE CONDUCTED AMICABLY AND TO THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF BOTH PARTIES CONCERNED.

THE BRITISH SERVICES EXPEDITION IS RECONSTRUCTING A VALUABLE ELEMENT OF SOCOTRA'S CHEQUERED HISTORY. FAR MORE IMPORTANT, HOWEVER, IS THE CARTOGRAPHIC WORK OF THE EXPEDITION'S SURVEY TEAMS WHICH IS BRINGING UP TO DATE THE ONLY MAP OF THE ISLAND IN EXISTENCE -- AND THAT WAS DRAWN IN 1835.
