  • Description

While the whole United States Navy's Sixth Fleet steamed menacingly up and down the Eastern reaches of the Mediterranean, several ships put in at Phaleron Bay, near Athens, and an invitation was extended to the King and Queen of Greece, and other members of the Royal Family, to inspect the carrier USS "Saratoga".

Other members of the party included King Michael, former king of Rumania. Various manoeuvres were put on for the benefit of the Royalties, including jet fighter and bomber sorties. The Queen of Greece went up in a helicopter to watch the demonstrations on and around the "Saratoga".

The presence of the Sixth Fleet in the Aegean Archipelago is taken to be an indication of the readiness of the American Government to assist President Chamoun of the Lebanon, should the strife in that country get out of hand. Already detachments of American Marines are being transported to the Sixth; to relieve other personnel', or so the Navy has said.

Britain is also building up her reserves of troops in the Mediterranean. Unites of paratroopers and marines have recently arrived in Cyprus, to combat the EOKA terrorists on the island. Possibly to be at hand int eh event of an emergency in Lebanon also.
