Background: North Korean President Kim II Sung, accompanied by his wife Kim Song Ae, arrived in Nouakchott -- Mauretania's capital -- on Friday (30 May) at the beginning of a state visit.
At the airport to greet them were President Moktar Ould Daddah and his wife Marieme Daddah.
President Kim's visit to this most northerly of West African states is part of general diplomatic offensive by North Korea to have the United Nations' Military Command removed from the Korean Peninsula.
President Kim had come to Mauretania from Algeria and Europe, where he had been touring states friendly to North Korea and seeking observer status in the world body.
Mauretania and North Korea have established close and friendly relations since the mid-1960's. This was strengthened in 1967 by a visit to Pyongyang by President Ould Daddah and his wife, and by a repeat visit to the North Korean capital in 1974.
