  • Description

Over 50,000 Hindu pilgrims arrived in the Nepalese capital of Katmandu last week to celebrate the annual festival of Mahashiveratri.

Devotees from all corners of the Himalayan Kingdom and India bathed themselves in the holy river Baghmati in the chill early morning rain, before praying in the Temple of Lord Pashupati Nath-whose festival the pilgrims were honouring.

As a further celebration, units of the Royal Nepalese Army presented a military parade at the Tundikhel, one of Asia's largest stadiums, were Nepal's King Birendra was crowned last month.

The King, making one of his first public appearances since his coronation, took the salute at Tuesday's (II March) marchpast.
