  • Description

Argentina's President Maria Estela Person swore in a new cabinet on Friday (11 July) but already there are indications the confrontation between herself and powerful labour unions will continue.)
Although she accepted the resignation of her controversial Minister of Social Welfare and Personal secretary, Senor Jose Lopez Rega, President Person has maintained Economic Minister Celestino Rodrigo, one of Senor Lopez Rega's proteges, in her new cabinet.

Senior Roadrigo's drastic economic moves at the beginning of June triggered the crisis which led to the cabinet reshuffle.

Senor Lopez Rega was replaced by Carlos Villone who had been second in command in the Social Welfare ministry. Senora Person also swore in Jorge Garrido as Defence Minister; Antonio Benitez as Minister of the Interior; and Ernesto Corvalan Nanclares as Minister of Justice. Some members of the cabinet were reappointed to their jobs.

The entire former cabinet had handed in its resignation at the beginning of a general strike called by the General Labour Confederation (C.G.T.) to protest against President Peron's wages policy.)
In an attempt to curb spiralling price increases, Economics minister Celestino Rodrigo had devalued the peso by fifty percent in early June. This sparked off a drive for higher wages by the unions. When they negotiated increases of as much as 150 percent, Senora person vetoed the rises and placed a 50 percent ceiling on wage increases.

The labour movement responded with the general strike which in turn produced the cabinet resignations. Senora Person then capitulated and allowed the negotiated pay rises to come into force.

In addition to confronting the economic crisis underlined this week with a Central Bank report that the country's foreign currency reserves fell by 18.6 million pounds sterling ($41 million U.S. dollars S) last week to a dangerous low of 101.8 million pounds sterling ($224 million U.S. dollars) the new cabinet must cope with rising political opposition in the National Congress.)
Last week the Champion of Deputies approved a Presidential succession law at variance with proposals of Senora Person. This follows a decision by the SENATE EARLIER LAST WEEK TO ELECT A NEW Senate President Dr Italo Luder who becomes first in line of succession to President Peron. She had ordered the Senate to leave its Presidency vacant in hopes the succession would go to Rahul Lastiri, speaker of the Chamber.
