  • Description

The Dalai Lama - Tibet's exiled temporal and spiritual leader -left the Birla House, Mussoorie, North-west India, Apr 30, his home for almost a year since he fled from the Chinese Communists, to take up a specially-prepared residence at Dharamsala in the Kangra Hills.

As the Dalai Lama drove to Dehra Dun station for his departure, Tibetans - including incense-burning students - lined the streets to bid him farewell. His car was preceded by a jeep-load of troops, and throughout, strict security measures were maintained.

When the Dalai Lama arrives at "Swarag Ashram" (Heavenly Abode), 6 miles from Dharamsala, he will find the same concern by the Indian government for his safety; the little hill-town is surrounded by military cantonments, and one easily-guarded road is the only access his home.
