  • Description

Greece has ordered a partial mobilisation of reservists in response to Turkish air and naval manoeuvres in the Aegean Sea, according to political spruces quoted by Reuters.

A military manoeuvre took place in northern Greece at the end of May to test the readiness of the Greek armed forces. Air patrols were stepped up the ensure that Turkish aircraft did not violated Greek airspace.

The two countries are in dispute over the extent of Greek airspace. greece has claimed an area stretching 10 miles (15 kilometres) from its shore, while Turkey argues that Greek airspace could not be more than six miles (9.5 kilometres).

The hostile neighbours have come dangerously close to war in the past two years. The main causes of confrontation have been the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1947 and rival claims to the riches of the Aegean seabed.

The United States has reached agreement on military aid to botH countries, but the agreements have yet to be ratified by the American Congress.

The disputes between Greece and Turkey have been a major concern to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Greece withdrew from the military structure of NATO IN 1974 after Turkey moved its troops into Cyprus. The Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Turhan Feyzioglu, has also warned that his country could feel obliged to leave NATO if the U.S. Congress does not ratify the new defence agreement.

Attempts were made at last month's NATO Foreign Ministers' Council in Norway to bring the two countries together for discussions but no major decisions were taken.

NATO fears that the confrontations may lead to war between Greece and Turkey and a weakening of NATO's south-eastern flank with the East European bloc.
