IN LAGOS THE LEADER OF THE RETURNING GROUP, FEDERAL WORKS AND TRANSPORT COMMISSIONER FEMI OKUNU, ADMITTED THE FAILURE OF THE TALKS, CALLED TO DISCUSS WAYS OF ENDING 14 MONTHS OF FIGHTING BETWEEN FEDERAL FORCES AND BIAFRA, THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN REGION.

    THE DELEGATION WAS MET AT LAGOS AIRPORT BY THE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON AND CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO, VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL.

    MR. OKUNU SAID THE TALKS BROKE DOWN LARGELY BECAUSE BIAFRAN DELEGATES REFUSED TO COMPROMISE ON SEVERAL VITAL ISSUES, INCLUDING A RESOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM OF TRANSPORTING RELIEF SUPPLIES INTO EMBATTLED AREAS.

    ANOTHER RETURNING DELEGATE, MR. ALLISON AYIDA, PERMANENT SECRETARY TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MINISTRY, DISCOUNTED REPORTED FEARS OF A MASS SLAUGHTER OF BIAFRANS BY ADVANCING FEDERAL TROOPS.

    MR. AYIDA SAID CIVILIANS FRIGHTENED BY BIAFRANS CLAIMS OF NIGERIAN GENOCIDE WOULD ALWAYS HAVE BUSH COUNTRY TO RUN TO.
