Background: Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to break up a demonstration of Basque militants on February 5. The demonstrators tried to use buses to block the main streets of Bilbao, the northern Spanish port that lies in the heart of the Basque country. Supporters of the militant Basque group ETA have been squeezed recently between a tougher security crackdown -- in both France and Spain -- and a successful Spanish government policy of offering amnesty to former ETA activists. The demonstration was sparked off by the recent murders of two former members of ETA, who had accepted Madrid's offer of amnesty, which has split the Basque community. The small band of demonstrators were soon dispersed by the riot police.
