Background: Nine people died in a nursing home fire in Wisconsin in the United States on Wednesday(April 5). They were among thirteen residents at the home, in the town of Green Bay -- a man and two women survived, and another man was away visiting.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

SYNOPSIS: Nine people died in a nursing home fire in the United Stats on Wednesday. Only three people in the home at the time escaped. Another resident was away visiting. The dead -- six men and three women, including the caretaker -- were among thirteen residents, aged from 16 to 85.

The bodies were taken to a temporary morgue set up nearby. The nursing home owner came to the morgue to help identify bodies and notify next of kin. He told newsmen at the scene that fire-alarms and fire extinguishers were installed at the home, an old converted farmhouse, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that had belonged to his late father. It was, he said, a boarding home rather than a nursing home -- for all the patients but one could walk unaided. It was not immediately known how the blaze had started.
