  • Description

Signor Antonio Segni, 68-year-old former Premier (Vice-premier and Defence Minister in the outgoing Fanfani Coalition Cabinet), became Italy's Prime Minister-designate after Feb 2 consultation with President Giovanni Gronchi at Rome's Quirinal - the Presidential Palace.

Pressmen crowded the Corazzieri Hall, waiting for Signor Segni's statement.

A Christian Democrat, Segni was Premier for the longest term since the downfall of Mussolini - 22 months, from 1955 to 1957. The greatest post-war land reforms he advocated led to the breaking up of large land holdings - cost him many acres of his own holdings.

In the pro-NATO v Socialist-neutralist battle now reaching climax, Segni has sympathisers in both camps. Strongly in favour of NATO and a friend of America he might receive support from the Conservatives. His land reform policy, help for poverty-stricken school-teachers and mission school building programme link him with radicals and Left-wing.

Feb 8 he conferred with fellow Christian Democrats.

The downfall of the Fanfani Coalition began with the resignation of a five-man group of Social Democrats led by Labour Minister Vigorelli after the Nenni Socialists rift with the Communists. Although obtaining most seats in last year's General Elections the Christian Democrats had not an absolute majority. They were joined by the Social Democrats.

Observes believe the present Italian crisis might be nearing a settlement but that Segni, if he does gain a confidence vote in the Chamber of Deputies, will have a slender majority.

If elected, his will be the 20th Government in 16 years.
