  • Description

The Apollo 16 moon rocket scheduled for liftoff in March 1972, began its journey to the launch pad on Monday (13 December).

Navy Lieutenant Commander Thomas Mattingly, one of three astronauts who will undertake the mission, watched the rocket, topped by its spacecraft, move out of the vehicle assembly building where it was prepared for the mission.

At the same time, some space scientists and engineers were becoming resigned to the possibility that experiments they have designed for the Apollo 17 mission -- scheduled for December next year -- may never materialism. There have been strong rumours that Apollo 17, planned as the final mission of the United States moon programme, may be scrapped in a money-saving move.
