Background: About 6,000 anti-Soviet demonstrators took to the streets of Oslo on Wednesday night (9 January). They were protesting against the Soviet intervention of Afghanistan.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators took part in a torch-lit march through the centre of Oslo. Their march was in protest against Moscow's deployment of troops in Afghanistan. Many of the demonstrators carried with them placards and banners calling for all Soviet troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan immediately, and condemning the Soviet move.

Among the organisers of the demonstration was the Young Communist Movement which has attacked the intervention. The Norwegian Communist Party itself has supported the Soviet action. The French Communists and Norway's communist Party are the only in Western Europe not to denounce Moscow's intervention. There were no incidents during the demonstration.
