  • Description

FRESH RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES. POLICE IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ARRESTED 86 DEMONSTRATORS ON SUNDAY ON CHARGES OF DISTURBING THE PEACE AFTER THEY TRIED TO FORCE THEIR WAY INTO A SEGREGATED RESTAURANT.

THE ARRESTS CAME JUST BEFORE THE DEPARTURE OF AN UNOFFICIAL UNITED NATIONS SUB-COMMISSION WHICH SPENT THE WEEKEND STUDYING RACIAL RELATIONS IN ATLANTA. (MEMBERS OF THE SUB-COMMISSION WERE ACTING AS INDIVIDUALS, NOT AS OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THEIR COUNTRIES.

POLICE ESTIMATED THAT 250 PERSONS, BOTH WHITE AND NEGRO, PICKETED THE RESTAURANT. SOME OF THEM REFUSED TO LEAVE THE ENTRANCE TO THE RESTAURANT UNTIL FORCIBLY CARRIED AWAY BY POLICE.

AMONG THOSE DETAINED WERE NEGRO COMEDIAN DICK GREGORY AND JAMES FOREMAN, LEADER OF THE STUDENT NON-VIOLENT CO-ORDINATING COMMITTEE, WHO ORGANIZED THE PROTEST.

MEMBERS OF THE U.N. SUB-COMMISSION DID NOT SEE THE DEMONSTRATION, WHICH WAS APPARENTLY TIMED TO COINCIDE WITH THEIR VISIT. THE PREVIOUS DAY, NEGROES CLASHED WITH KU KLUX KLANSMEN.
