SYNOPSIS: The Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, and the Opposition leader, Mr. Sneddne, found themselves on the same public platform today.
An ABC reporter described it as an occasion free from blatant electioneering.... but still the Whitlams and the Sneddens tried to score points off each other. The occasion was the opening of the first stage of a Roman Catholic village for the aged at Austral on the southwestern outskirts of Sydney. It cost almost five-hundred-thousand dollars.
A crowd of more than four-thousand people, many of them from Sydney's italian community attended the opening ceremony.
Mr. Snedden who spoke first set the pace by repeating his speech in italian. Not to be outdone Mr. Whitlam introduced his speech also in Italian. Both were greeted with loud cheers.
The motel-type village was built by the Italian order of Scallabrini Brothers.
