  • Description

The Dutch and Indonesian governments have rejected key demands for political concessions made by South Moluccan gunmen holding 57 hostages Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The gunmen are holding 33 of the hostages on the train they hijacked on Tuesday (2 December). They have already killed three other hostages. The other 24 hostages are being held in the consulate which gunmen captured when they stormed it on Thursday (4 December) shooting a staff member in the stomach.

The Indonesian ambassador to Holland, Mr. Sutopo Yuwong Projohandoko, has refused to meet mediators named by the gunmen holed up in the consulate. The ambassador said the sieges were the Dutch Government's problem, and it was up to them to find a solution.

SYNOPSIS: South Moluccan gunmen were still holding fifty seven people hostage in two separate sieges in the Netherlands on Saturday.

At Beilen thirty three hostages were being held aboard a train seized by gunmen on Tuesday and the other twenty four were holed up in the Indonesian consulate in Amsterdam.

Dutch police and army personnel are keeping a twenty four hour vigil on the situation, which has so far claimed the lives of three hostages. On Saturday both the Dutch and Indonesian governments announced that they would make no political concessions to the gunmen.

In Amsterdam food was delivered to the consulate for the hostages and latest reports indicated that a stalemate appeared to be developing. The Indonesian ambassador to Holland, Mr. Sutopo Yuwono Projohandoko, refused to meet mediators named by the gunmen.

At a meeting in the Hague Mr. Projohandoko told the Dutch Foreign Minister, Max van Der Stoel, that talks with the gunmen were out of the question and it was completely up to Holland to find a solution to the hostage situation.
