A MARINE BIOLOGIST IS HARPOONING WHALES FROM A U.S. NAVY HELICOPTER IN ORDER TO LEARN?

  • Description

A MARINE BIOLOGIST IS HARPOONING WHALES FROM A U.S. NAVY HELICOPTER IN ORDER TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM. SMALL RADIO TRANSMITTERS ARE IMPLANTED IN THE WHALES BY THE HARPOONS, AND THE SIGNAL FROM THE TRANSMITTERS IS THEN USED TO TRACK THE CREATURES.

DR. WILLIAM E. SCHEVILL OF THE WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION IS THE HARPOONER CONCERNED. HE HAS BEEN STUDYING THE RIGHT WHALE, A MEDIUM SIZED LEVIATMAN WHOSE HABITS, FEEDING GROUNDS, AND RANGE ARE LARGELY UNKNOWN. THE WHALES DO SPEND ABOUT TWO MONTHS EACH SPRING FEEDING IN CAPE COD BAY, HOWEVER, AND DR. SCHEVILL CONCEIVED THE IDEA OF IMPLANTING RADIO TRANSMITTERS IN THEM THEN AND TRACKING THEM. THE RESEARCH IS PART OF A LARGE PROGRAMME OF OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCH BEING CARRIED OUT UNDER NAVY AUSPICES.

A SMALL BOAT IS USED TO LOCATE THE WHALES. THEN THE HELICOPTER BEARING DR. SCHEVILL AND HIS HARPOONS CLOSES IN. THE HARPOON - TRANSMITTER PACKAGE IS DROPPED FROM THE HELICOPTER AND, IF THE WIND IS RIGHT, IMPLANTS ITSELF IN THE WHALE. THE DOCTOR SAYS IT HURTS THEM ABOUT AS MUCH AS A BEE STING HURTS A MAN. THEN AN OBSERVATION PLANE TRACKS THE WHALE.
