  • Description

TORRENTIAL RAIN AT WEIJA IN THE NORTH OF GHANA HAS CAUSED WIDESPREAD FLOODING AND DAMAGE. AT ONE POINT THE RIVER DENSU BURST ITS BANKS AND BREACHED A DAM AT THE WEIJA WATER WORKS WHICH SUPPLIES NINE MILLION GALLONS OF WATER A DAY TO THE ACCRA - TAMA AREAS.

THE FLOODS HAVE BROUGHT DISASTER TO ABOUT SIX VILLAGES IN ACCRA WEST. THE WORST AFFECTED WAS TETTE GBU WHERE 3,000 PEOPLE ARE WITHOUT HOMES. THE DEATH TOLL SO FAR IS FIVE.

ALTHOUGH THE WEIJA DAM HAS BEEN BADLY DAMAGED IT STILL SUPPLIES WATER TO PARTS OF THE CAPITAL.

THE GOVERNMENT NOW PLANS TO REBUILD THE DAM - AND IT WILL HAVE A DUAL PURPOSE - IT WILL SERVE AS A MUNICIPAL WATER SUPPLY AND FOR IRRIGATION.
