Background: THE PEOPLE OF FILETTO -- A TINY VILLAGE IN THE HILLS OF CENTRAL ITALY, ARE DIVIDED ON WHETHER TO FORGIVE A GERMAN BISHOP ACCUSED OF PASSING ON AN ORDER FOR THE EXECUTION OF 17 ITALIANS DURING WORLD WAR II. A PRELIMINARY JUDICIAL INQUIRY INTO THE SHOOTING HAS BEEN ORDERED, AND ROMAN CATHOLIC AUXILLIARY BISHOP OF MUNICH, MONSIGNOR MATTHIAS DEFREGGER, HAS ACCEPTED PARTIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE KILLINGS AND HAS SOUGHT THE FORGIVENESS OF THE PEOPLE OF FILETTO.

IN JUNE, 1944, WHEN MONSIGNOR DEFREGGER WAS AN ARMY CAPTAIN, 17 VILLAGERS WERE EXECUTED AS A REPRISAL FOR THE KILLING OF A GERMAN SOLDIER. MONSIGNOR DEFREGGER, WHO IS NOW 53, MADE HIS PLEA FOR FORGIVENESS AFTER A GERMAN NEWS MAGAZINE ACCUSED HIM OF PASSING ON THE EXECUTION ORDER.

THE PARISH PRIEST OF FILETTO, DOM DEMETRIO, FAVOURS FORGIVENESS. AND HE IS PETITIONING THE VILLAGERS WITH A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR THE BISHOP'S PARDON. BUT THE COMMUNIST DEPUTY FROM THE NEARBY TOWN OF L'AQUILA, ERCOLE CICERONE, HAS DEMANDED THE EXTRADITION OF THE BISHOP AS A WAR CRIMINAL.

ACCORDING TO MAYOR FRANCO CASILLI, IT IS HARD TO SAY WHICH BRANCH OF OPINION IS THE STRONGER.

IN THE VILLAGE OF FILETTO ITSELF, THERE ARE STILL PILGRIMAGES TO THE MONUMENT SET UP TO COMMEMORATE THE 17 WHO DIED. THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS ARE ON THE WALLS OF THE MONUMENT, AND AROUND ITS BASE PEOPLE STILL COME TO OFFER PRAYERS.

THE 17 ARE BURIED IN THE LOCAL CEMETERY, NOT FAR FROM THE STRETCH OF WALL ALONG WHICH, 25 YEARS AGO, THEY WERE LINED UP AND SHOT.

THE TINY VILLAGE OF FILETTO COMES UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF L'AQUILA, AND ON WEDNESDAY (30 JULY) THERE WILL BE A VOTE TAKEN IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER ON A RESOLUTION PUT FORWARD BY THE MAYOR AND RECOMMENDING A PARDON. THE 3-HUNDRED PEOPLE OF FILETTO ARE WAITING SEE WHAT THE OUTCOME OF THAT VOTE WILL BE.
