  • Description

A JAPANESE DELEGATION ARRIVED IN CAIRO ON THURSDAY (3 FEBRUARY) FOR TALKS WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC. THE DELEGATION IS HEADED BY THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT'S SPECIAL ENVOY, MR SHOGIRO KAWASHIMA.

THE TEN-MAN DELEGATION INCLUDES A NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT AS WELL AS OFFICIALS FROM THE ECONOMIC AND FOREIGN MINISTERS.

THEIR VISIT FOLLOWS THE RECENT VISIT TO JAPAN OF UAR GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT IS STUDYING A PLAN TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE UAR WHO HAS ASKED JAPAN FOR 100 MILLION DOLLARS (35,700,000 STERLING) TO FINANCE ITS IMPORTS OF JAPANESE PRODUCTS, MAINLY INDUSTRIAL PLANT AND EQUIPMENT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY IN CAIRO AND THE BUILDING OF HOTELS TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF UAR'S EXPANDING TOURIST INDUSTRY.

MR KAWASHIMA IS CARRYING WITH HIM AN INVITATION FROM MR EISAKU SATU, THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER, TO PRESIDENT NASSER TO VISIT JAPAN. A SIMILAR INVITATION IS BEING MADE ALSO TO SAUDI ARABIA'S KING FEISAL.

AT THE AIRPORT, THE DELEGATION WAS MET BY DR ABDUL KADER HATEM, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER OF THE UAR.
