Another big change in Cuba...as foreign firms were being nationalised, and counter revolutionaries, including three Americans, were being executed by a firing squad, the Cuban Government approved Oct 15 a sweeping urban reform law.
Result: large crowds of Cubans queueing up to get forms which when filled in will enable them, under the terms of the new law, to become owners of their rented homes in five years' from now.
The law provides that no owner of a flat, building or house can receive more than about ???215 monthly as "rental income". Small property owners affected are to be given a monthly pension. But hotels, motels, and apartments or houses at summer and winter resorts are excluded.
Latest chapter in the Cuban story: USA's stoppage of nearly all exports to her troublesome neighbour.
