    M. MOISE TSHOMBE, WHO WAS FORCED TO RESIGN THE CONGOLESE PREMIERSHIP ON WEDNESDAY, MET WITH?

  • Description

    M. MOISE TSHOMBE, WHO WAS FORCED TO RESIGN THE CONGOLESE PREMIERSHIP ON WEDNESDAY, MET WITH HIS SUCCESSOR YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), M. EVARISTE KIMBA.

WHEN PRESIDENT KASAVUBU DISMISSED M. TSHOMBE'S GOVERNMENT, ARMED GUARDS WERE PLACED ON SOME PUBLIC BUILDINGS, AND THERE WERE GUARDS OUTSIDE THE RADIO STATION WHEN THE TWO MEN MET.

    M. TSHOMBE ARRIVED AN HOUR LATE FOR THE MEETINGS, WHICH HAD BEEN SCHEDULED FOR 4 P.M. (LOCAL TIME). PRESENT AT THE MEETING WERE LEADERS OF SOME OF THE POLITICAL GROUPS IN THE FORMER GOVERNMENT INCLUDING M. LASSIRY, WHO MAY HAVE A POST IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT WHEN IT IS ANNOUNCED.

THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER ARRIVED ACCOMPANIED BY M, LUBAYA, THE FORMER MINISTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND A MEMBER OF M. TSHOMBE'S CONACO PARTY.

AFTER THE MEETING, M. KIMBA TOLD REPORTERS THAT M. TSHOMBE WOULD NOW BE CONSIDERING WHETHER HIS CONACO PARTY SHOULD JOIN THE "NATIONAL UNION" GOVERNMENT. ASKED IF M. TSHOMBE WOULD HOLD A POST IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT, M. KIMBA SAID THAT WAS UP TO THE CONACO PARTY. IF M. TSHOMBE WISHED TO REPRESENT THE CONACO PARTY IN THE GOVERNMENT, THAT WAS ALL RIGHT WITH HIM. QUESTIONED ON THE CONGO'S INTERNATIONAL ROLE, M. KIMBA SAID THERE WOULD BE NO CHANGE IN THE CONGO'S RELATIONS WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD. THE NEW ADMINISTRATION WOULD PRESENT A PROGRAMME TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE COUNTRY.

NO MINISTERS IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT HAVE YET BEEN ANNOUNCED, BUT IT'S THOUGHT PROBABLE THAT M. TSHOMBE WILL NOT JOIN THE GOVERNMENT, PREFERRING INSTEAD TO CHALLENGE PRESIDENT KASAVUBU IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS NEXT FEBRUARY.
