  • Description

While goods pile up on the dockside and shipping lies idle in Copenhagen harbour, about 3,000 of the 140,000 seamen and transport workers on strike gathered outside Christiansborg Castle protesting against any state interference with their right to strike.

A proposal by the Opposition that the strike, affecting workers in transport and metallurgical industries, should be ended through compulsory arbitration or by giving the State Mediator's draft settlement the force of law, was rejected. Parliament instead passed a resolution calling on employers and trade unions to resume negotiations and settle the dispute amongst themselves.

The strike, in support of demands for higher wages and other benefits, is in its third day, and workers in other trades may stop work soon if no settlement is reached. About three-quarters of the engineering industry is affected.
