  • Description

Demonstrators for and against Egypt's interim peace agreement with Israel met President Anwar Sadat when he arrived in New York on Wednesday (29 October) to address the United Nations General Assembly.

The President, who arrived in America on Monday (27 October), is currently on an eleven day visit to the U.S.A
A coalition group comprising twenty-seven Arab groups who disagree with the Sinai agreement were at 47th street and First Avenue near the U.N. building to voice their opposition. Only two blocks away a small group of demonstrators, who supported the President, welcomed him to the United Sates.

The demonstrations were orderly except for an incident in which a woman yelled out "Long Live Israel" which seemed to provide some of the Arabs in the crowd. However they were restrained by police as they surged towards the women.

Inside the U.N. President Sadat was warmly welcomed by U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim. The President began his address to a standing room only crowd and received a loud ovation on completion.

In his speech he called for immediate consultation with all parties concerned -- including the Palestine Liberation Organisation -- for the reconvening of the Middle East peace conference in Geneva.
