The Cambodian army has moved three battalions into the town of Prek Tameak which is located less than 12 miles from Phnom Penh. The Cambodian government says the town is surrounded by over tow thousand North Vietnamese, Viet Cong and anti-government Cambodians and that the possible fall of the town would directly threaten the security of the Cambodian capital.
Thus far the Cambodian defenders have engaged in only light skirmishes. While the soldiers are eager, they are inexperienced and many of them are teenagers. One of the Cambodian battalion commanders said his men were dug in and ready to defend the area.
The villagers living closest to the Cambodian battalions have decided to stay in their homes, but those villagers living near the North Vietnamese troop concentrations were slowly evacuating the area.
