  • Description

Cambodia's Foreign Minister, Mr Yem Sambaur, arrived in Djakarta on Thursday (i4th May) to make a direct appeal to countries attending the Asian and Pacific Conference for arms and ammunition for his country's armed forces.

On his arrival at the Indonesian capital Mr Sambeur was welcomed by the Information Minister, Mr Budiarejo (with glasses), and diplomats. Mr Sambaur shortly afterwards held a press conference.

His statement to newsmen that he would call for arms and ammunition, found ready critics. The Philippines Foreign Secretary, Mr Carlos Romulo, said he would oppose any attempt to send arms into Cambodia. He felt the conference had been called to prevent the escalation of the present conflict, and planned to support any proposal for the withdrawal of foreign troops from that country. Mr Romulo, in his criticism of Mr Sambaur's statement, also said that any arms despatch to Cambodia would constitute an intervention.

On Friday, the day following Mr Sambaur's arrival, Foreign Ministers from a dozen Asian countries began preliminary talks to plan an agenda for their 2-day talks this weekend. The Conference Convenor is Mr Adam Malik of Indonesia.
