  • Description

Britain indicated on Wednesday (27 February) that it was ready to agree to an international extension of territorial waters to a new limit of 12 miles (19 kms).

The new limit was suggested at a preparatory meeting in London for the proposed International Law of the Sea in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas in June.

The two-day London meeting was held to assess which problems and questions should be discussed by delegates and scientific advisers at the Caracas conference.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman, Lord Kennet, the British opposition spokesman on Foreign Affairs, warned that any use of the sea by the nations of the world tended to divide the oceans as a global unit.
