    GENERALISSIMO CHIANG KAI-SHEK AND HIS DEPUTY, MR. YEN WERE INAUGURATED LAST WEEK AS THE LEADERS OF TAIWAN FOR THE NEXT SIX YEARS.

    GENERALISSIMO CHIANG, WHO IS 78, BEGAN HIS FIRST SIX-YEAR TERM OF OFFICE IN 1948 AND AT HIS INAUGURATION LAST WEEK HE DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS "AN UNDISCOURAGED OLD SOLDIER" AND PLEDGED THE RECOVERY OF THE CHINESE MAINLAND.

    GENERALISSIMO CHIANG TOOK THE OATH IN THE TAIPEH CITY HALL, WHICH WAS PACKED WITH 2,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING SPECIAL ENVOYS FROM FIFTEEN COUNTRIES. AFTERWARDS, HE APPEARED WITH HIS DEPUTIES ON THE BALCONY BEFORE A RALLY OF TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE, MAINLY FLAG-WAVING STUDENTS. THOUSANDS OF DOVES AND COLOURED BALLOONS WERE RELEASED INTO THE AIR TO MARK THE INAUGURATION.
