INTRODUCTION: In the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, an important 10-day seminar on the development and utilisation of timber opened on Wednesday (13 April).

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was organised by the Agency for Cultural and Technical Co-operation and delegates from 12 out of the 26 countries represented in the Agency attended. The Ivory Coast Minister for Water and Forests, Monsieur Koffi Attobra, opened the seminar and in his speech highlighted its objectives -- an exchange of experiences in forestry and timber industry development. Monsieur Attobra also said that the technical and commercial aspects of the utilisation of wood were of paramount importance.

Like many African countries the Ivory Coast's economic development has been based on the export of agricultural products and timber. This was stimulated in 1950 with the opening of the Vridi Canal and the Abidjan deep-water harbour. During the opening session of the seminar the need for regional co-operation between timber-producing countries was emphasised, as was the promotion of new forestry resources. As well as 11 African countries, several international agencies were also represented, together with a delegation from Vietnam.
