SYNOPSIS: In Accra's Independence Square on Saturday, Colonel I.K. Acheampong reviewed a parade honouring the first anniversary of his accession to power as Ghana's Head of State.

Reviewing the parade with Colonel with Colonel Acheampong was President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania.

Ghana's tribal chiefs were among the large crowd celebrating the occasion. Many of them had travelled for several days to be present at the parade.

Contingents from the Ghanaian army were the first to march past the saluting-dais, escorting the colour-party.

Since Colonel Acheampong became head of the National Redemption Council of Ghana on January the thirteenth last year, the army has had an important role in the country's affairs. In an address last week, the Colonel said that he would not hand over power to a civilian administration unless Ghana's economy was sound.

Next - the police, followed by the navy.....

The wives of Colonel Acheampong and President Ould Daddah were also watching from the dais.... Than followed the turn of the army's armoured wing.

Afterwards, the celebrations were extended to include not only, as Colonel Acheampong said, Ghana's own Revolution of a year ago, but also the African revolution as a whole. Assisted by President Ould Daddah, the Chanaian leader lit 'the flame of liberation'....
Liberation movement representatives watched the ceremony.
