    The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, says Cuba intends to withdraw its troops from Angola. Dr. Kissinger, in a one-day visit to the tiny European Duchy of Luxembourg on Tuesday (25 May) revealed the information at an informal news conference. Cuba's decision was relayed in a latter from Cuban leader Dr. Fidel Castro to Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme, said Dr. Kissinger. He said part of Dr. Castro's letter was read to him by Mr. Palme during his recent visit to Sweden.

    The troops withdrawal would be at the rate of 200 men a week, according to the letter.

    Dr. Kissinger said the Untied States wold be conducting its own investigation and looking for further confirmation of the Cuban intention.

    Cuban troops and Soviet military equipment helped the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) Government defeat western-backed rival liberation moments in the recently-ended civil was there. Current United States's estimates put the number of Cuban troops still in Angola at 14,000. At a withdrawal rate of 200 a week, it would take about 18 months to complete the exercise.

    Dr. Kissinger's Luxembourg visit came towards the end of his tour through Africa and Europe. On arrival he was met by Prime Minister Mr. Gaston Thorn, and was later entertained by the country's head of state, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. M. Thorn is also Chairman of the European Economic Community's (EEC) Council of Ministers and President of the United Nations General Assembly.
