  • Description

IN HONG KONG YESTERDAY, AS THE GOVERNOR, SIR DAVID TRENCH PREDICTED AN EARLY RETURN TO NORMALITY, HUNDREDS OF CHINESE WAVING PLACARDS AND DISTRIBUTING LEAFLETS ACCUSING THE GOVERNOR OF 'CRIMES' IN PUTTING DOWN CHINESE DEMONSTRATIONS, PLASTERED THE WALLS OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE WITH POSTERS. THEY OFFERED NO VIOLENCE, AND KEPT TO 'UNION HOURS', ARRIVING AT NINE IN THE MORNING, TAKING AN HOUR FOR LUNCH, AND LEAVING AT FIVE.

SIR DAVID TRENCH REFUSED TO ADMIT ANY DELECTATIONS TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE. YESTERDAY HE REPORTED TO THE COMMONWEALTH OFFICE IN LONDON THAT HE HAD NOT BEEN BESIEGED BY CHINESE MOBS, AS SUGGESTED IN SOME PRESS REPORTS. HE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH SEVERAL DELEGATIONS, SHOUTING AND SINGING, HAD STUCK POSTERS ON THE GATES OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE, HE SAID THERE HAD BEEN NO INCIDENTS OR VIOLENCE, AND HE ANTICIPATED AN EARLY RETURN TO NORMALITY.

BETWEEN 200 AND 300 CHANTING DEMONSTRATORS CROWDED OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT HOUSE AND DEMANDED AN END TO 'ATROCITIES' AGAINST CHINESE WORKERS.
