  • Description

A visiting delegation from the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) met with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Kiichi Miyazawa, and members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Wednesday (21 April).

The four-man delegation is led by Farouk Kaddoumi -- chief spokesman for foreign affairs of the PLO. They arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday (20 April) for an eight-day visit at the invitation of the LDP.

The Japanese government has agreed to the opening of a PLO office in Tokyo. The subject was first discussed in the summer of 1945 when Mr. Miyazawa met with Mr. Al-Hutoh, chief of the PLO's Beirut office. Mr. Al-Hutoh is also visiting Japan at the moment.

The proposed PLO office in Tokyo will be treated by the Japanese Foreign Ministry as a private one, without diplomatic status. But the plans to open the office have drawn protests from the Israeli Embassy in Tokyo.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Kaddoumi and his delegation met with members of the LDP, including the party's Secretary-General, Yasuhiro Nakasone.

Mr. Kaddoumi plans to hold a news conference before he leaves next Tuesday (27 April).

SYNOPSIS: The Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo--where Foreign Minister Kiichi Miyazawa met a visiting delegation from the Palestine Liberation Organisation on Wednesday.

The delegation is on an eight-day visit to Japan. Mr. Miyazawa met delegation leaders Farouk Kaddoumi and Shafik Al-Hutoh, head of the PLO's Beirut office. The Japanese government has agreed to the opening of a PLO office in Tokyo later this year. But it will not have diplomatic status.

The delegation also met Mr. Nakasone -- Secretary-General of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party -- at the party's headquarters. The PLO visit is at the invitation of the LDP. Japan's Middle East policy has become increasingly more pro-Arab in recent years and the Israeli Embassy has protested at the proposed PLO office in Tokyo.
