    GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, AMERICA'S COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IN THE PACIFIC DURING WORLD WAR II, ARRIVED AT MANILA AIRPORT IN THE PHILIPPINES ON JULY 3RD FOR A 10-DAY SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY TO THE SCENES OF SOME OF HIS FAMOUS BATTLES.

    TO THE VAST CROWD THAT GAVE HIM A CHEERING, SHOUTING, WAVING WELCOME, THE 91-YEAR-OLD GENERAL SAID: "I HAVE RETURNED," PARAPHRASING HIS FAMOUS WARTIME PLEDGE, "I SHALL RETURN," UTTERED WHEN THE JAPANESE DROVE THE U.S. FORCES OUT OF THE PHILIPPINES.

    PRESIDENT CARLOS P. GARCIA AND HIS WIFE WERE AT THE AIRPORT TO MEET THE GENERAL. THE TWO MEN GREETED EACH OTHER AS OLD COMRADES IN ARMS. PRESIDENT GARCIA LED A GUERILLA UNIT DURING THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION.

    GENERAL MACARTHUR'S PARTY INCLUDED HIS WIFE; HIS AID, MAJOR GENERAL COURTNEY WHITNEY; AND THE PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES, CARLOS P. ROMULO AND MRS ROMULO.

    ON JULY 4TH, GENERAL MACARTHUR WAS THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKER AT CEREMONIES IN LUNETA PARK MARKING THE FIFTEENTH YEAR OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE FROM THE UNITED STATES. HUNDREDS OF WAR VETERANS TOOK PART IN A MARCH PAST. ALSO TAXING PART WERE UNITS FROM THE PHILIPPINE ARMED FORCES, THE U.S. ARMY, AIR FORCE, NAVY AND MARINES AND THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY.
