    A GIANT MILITARY AIRFIELD BUILT BY THAILAND WITH UNITED STATES HELP AT SATTAHIP, SOUTH EAST BANGKOK, IS EXPECTED TO BE FULLY OPERATIONAL WITHIN A FEW DAYS. THE AIRFIELD WAS BUILT AT A COST OF MORE THAN GBP31,000,000 STERLING.

    THE AIRFIELD IS 11,500 FEET (3,500 METRES) LONG AND 200 FEET (ABOUT 60 METRES) WIDE AND IS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST MODERN AIRFIELD INS SOUTH-EAST ASIA, CAPABLE OF ACCOMMODATING GIANT B-25 BOMBERS.

    IT CAN ALSO HANDLE THE SUPERSONIC JET PASSENGER PLANES NOW BEING DEVELOPED.

    KNOWN AS U-TAPAO AIRFIELD, WORK ON IT BEGAN IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR. SOME 2,000 THAIS AND 130 AMERICANS UNDERTOOK THE CONSTRUCTION WORK. SO FAR, THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE FIRST OF FOUR PROJECTED AIRCRAFT APRONS, EACH COVERING 190,000 SQUARE YARDS.

    IN A SIMPLE CEREMONY, THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR GRAHAM MARTIN, HANDED OVER THE AIRFIELD TO THE THAI PRIME MINISTER, FIELD MARSHAL THANOM KITTIKACHORN. AS JET AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD, A HIGH-RANKING BUDDHIST MONK BLESSED FIELD MARSHAL KITTIKACHORN, MR MARTIN AND OTHERS PRESENT. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A CEREMONIAL MARCH PAST OF AMERICAN AND THAI TROOPS.
