Background: Elimination events for the world championship kayak and canoe sailing were held on the Auvezere, 30 miles south of Limoges. The finals will take place at Colorado, U.S.A., on 12th. June.

The organisers of these heats, the Kayak Club of France, intended the contestants to start at Savignac-Ledrier and finish at Saint-Mesmin, two miles down river. As the river was in flood, with dangerously strong currents, the course was shifted further along, St. Mesmin bridge being the start.

Although the Auvezere was turbulent, the course was easier to negotiate than was planned, the higher waters having covered many of the obstacles.

There are four classifications for each heat; a time trial, for individual boats; separate time trials for various types of craft; a club qualification, where the times of the first three boats for each club competing are compared; and a similar event for each competing country.

Every kayak or canoe in the trials must conform with standards and regulations internationally applied. The contestants start one after the other with a three minute gap between each boat. Should anyone find that he is being overtaken the rules demand that the slower canoeist yields and allows the faster person to pass unobstructed.

This year, the fifth championships, three countries competed-France, Belgium and Switzerland. The Belgium champion, Beaujean, won the individual event with a time of one hour six minutes and 31.2 seconds. Gondal, the French champion canoeist was second, 25 seconds behind the winner.

The club event was won by the Nautical Club of Auvergne of France with an aggregate time of three hours thirty seven minutes 3.2 seconds. The French club, Canoe-Club Valentinois, was second, having taken three hours forty five minutes and 45.3 seconds. Another French club, Kayak Club of France was third.

The winning country was France. This is understandable as there were five French clubs competing but only one Swiss and one Belgium.
