  • Description

Greek ferry captain Demetrios Antypas went before an Italian Prosecutor on Tuesday (31 August) to face interrogation about the disaster which overran his ferry when it caught fire in the Adriatoc Ocean on Saturday (28 August).

Twenty-four passengers died in the tragedy and the captain, 43, has been accused with multiple manslaughter. The arrest warrant, served yesterday (30 August) also accuses captain Antypas of allowing his ship to be overloaded, having inadequate safety equipment, and deserting his ship before passengers.

The Italian Mercantile Ministry said that the official inquiry would be a Greek concern, as the accident occurred outside Italian territorial waters. But the Public Prosecutor's office has issued a sequestration order on the 11,400-ton ship "Heleanna" which is now lying in Brindisi Harbour.
