TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 3): QUESTION: "You have been tested so many times and suited and fitted. Do you ever feel that you are just a commodity being handled by people?".

ANSWER: "No, not really. I think it is one advantage that we have over the chimps and monkeys - we are able to yell out at the proper time".

QUESTION: "When you fellows get together with yourselves, what do you talk about?".

ANSWER: "Well, I have very little time off actually putting all our attention to the objectives of space flight. We take a few moments to go water-skiing and playing golf".

    QUESTION: "Do you like water-skiing?".

    ANSWER: "Yes, I do".

QUESTION: "About that Corvette you drive, do you like that?".

    ANSWER: "Yes, I do".

QUESTION: "What do you like most of all about it?".

ANSWER: "Well, actually I feed a little good underneath the hood to make it go faster than the ordinary car".

QUESTION:"If you were not involved in this and had the chance, would you like to take part in some race driving?".

ANSWER: "I indeed would. I think it would be a very fascinating business".

Background: Bad weather foiled America's first attempt to send a manned Mercury Redstone rocket on a range flight from Cape Canaveral, May 2. Two and a half hours before count-down the launching was postponed - initially for a few hours then until May 5. The rapidly evaporating liquid fuel had to be drained off completely, and it was stated that further delay was caused by a damaged liquid oxygen line.

The American astronaut, 37-year-old Navy Commander Alan Shepard, had already donned his space suit in readiness for the flight. He was interviewed before news of the postponement came through.
