  • Description

Bad weather foiled America's first attempt to send a manned Mercury Redstone rocket on a range flight from Cape Canaveral, May 2. Two and a half hours before count-down the launching was postponed - initially for a few hours then until May 5. The rapidly evaporating liquid fuel had to be drained off completely, and it was stated that further delay was caused by a damaged liquid oxygen line.

The American astronaut, 37-year-old Navy Commander Alan Shepard, had already donned his space suit in readiness for the flight. He was interviewed before news of the postponement came through.
