  • Description

In an announcement on Tuesday evening (May 19), the Governing body of International Cricket, the Cricket Council, decided that the visit to England by the South African Touring team will take place this summer as planned. It had been expected that after calling an emergency meeting of the Council at Lords to consider objections to the tour, the Cricket Council would cancel it.

During Tuesday, several deputations who were to make last-minute appeals to the Cricket Council to stop the tour had their meetings called off by the Council. The Bishop of London, the Rt. Reverend Robert Stopford, Lord Gore-Booth, former head of the Foreign Office, and Lord Hunt, leader of the successful British Everest Expedition, were among the people involved. Another deputation, of Members of Parliament, received a telephone call from Mr. Billy Griffith, Secretary of the M.C.C. and the Cricket Council, saying it would now be `quite impossible' to meet their deputation.

A new aspect to the Cricket Council's statement on Tuesday was their commitment to undertake no further test tours to South Africa until South African cricket is played, and teams selected, on a multi-racial basis. Mr. Billy Griffith, Secretary of the M.C.C. and the Cricket Council, was asked what had led to the decision.....

A number of groups have been for months campaigning against the tour, but the most military is the "Stop The `70's Tour Committee", led by 20 year-old Peter Hain, whose parents are South African. He was among the first to give this reactions to the Cricket Councils decision:
