  • Description

NEW YORKERS STAGED A MINOR REVOLT ON MONDAY AFTER FARES WERE INCREASED FOR THE SUBWAY (UNDERGROUND). AT ONE STATION, IN SUBURBAN FOREST HILLS, FIVE PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED DURING A NOISY DEMONSTRATION.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, MEMBERS OF A CITIZENS ORGANISATION SET UP TO PROTEST AGAINST THE 10 CENT (TENPENCE STERLING) INCREASE, STORMED THE TURNSTILES AND PUSHED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE GATES LEADING TO THE PLATFORM. THEY WERE JOINED BY SOME OF THE PEOPLE AMONG THE LINES OF PASSENGERS WAITING TO BUY THE NEW TOKENS NEEDED FOR THE TURNSTILES. NEW YORK OPERATES A ONE-FARE SYSTEM AND SPECIAL TOKENS HAVE TO BE PUT INTO A SLOT IN THE TURNSTILES BEFORE A PASSENGER CAN GET TO THE TRAINS.

THE NEW FARE OF 30 CENTS (TWO SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE STERLING) WENT INTO EFFECT ON SUNDAY. BUT IT WAS NOT UNTIL MONDAY WHEN NEW YORKERS RETURNED TO WORK AFTER THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY THAT ITS IMPACT WAS FELT.
