  • Description

The newcomers to London Zoo - a young male Mountain Gorilla and a female Chimpanzee - received their first visitors May 20, thirty hours after their arrival. Press photographers had to wear surgical masks to protect the jungle animals from possible infection.

The two-year-old Mountain Gorilla - only the second gorilla ever to be brought to London Zoo - came from Uganda, with the chimpanzee for its companion on the 4,400-mile journey.

Few Mountain Gorillas are left in their remaining habitats, including the Birunga Mountain range bordering Uganda and the Belgian congo. Normally these animals are strictly protected by the two Governments, but this particular one was abandoned by its mother and had to be caught because it was still too young to fend for itself.

After a landrover journey from the mountains to Entebbe, the lonely and downcast young gorilla befriended a chimpanzee. Both were bought from the Game Department for GBP2,000 and shipped to London in a combined crate. The bulk of the money will be used to further the work of the Uganda gorilla sanctuary.
