  • Description

THE 5,500-TON LIBERIAN STEAMER "SOUTH AMERICA" WAS STILL ABLAZE OFF THE HOOK OF HOLLAND TONIGHT (FRIDAY), NEARLY 24-HOURS AFTER A SERIES OF EXPLOSIONS HAD SHAKEN THE SHIP.

ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CREW, LANDED BY THE BRITISH CHANNEL FERRYBOAT "AVALON" SAID HIS SHIP WAS BURNING LIKE A TORCH. THE CREW HAD NO TIME TO GET THEIR BELONGINGS BEFORE ABANDONING SHIP. REPORTS SAID BARRELS OF PETROL ON BOARD SOON EXPLODED THROUGH THE HEAT.

A DUTCH TUG WENT ALONGSIDE THE SHIP AND TRIED TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. THE CAPTAIN AND THREE OFFICERS OF THE "SOUTH AMERICA" STAYED ON THE TUG TO HELP FIGHT THE FIRE.

SEVERAL OTHER SHIPS HURRIED TO THE STEAMER'S ASSISTANCE AFTER RADIO CALLS FOR HELP HAD BEEN SENT OUT.

TWENTY-FIVE MEN LANDED BY THE "AVALON" HAD BEEN PICKED UP FROM THEIR LIFEBOATS. THEY WERE GIVEN REFRESHMENTS AT A RED CROSS CENTRE AT THE HOOK.
