  • Description

FIVE PIERS AND A NUMBER OF WATERFRONT BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED IN A SPECTACULAR FIRE THAT SWEPT ACROSS THE JERSEY CITY DOCK AREA ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT. FIREMEN'S WORK WAS BADLY HAMPERED BY GUSTY WINDS REACHING THIRTY MILES AN HOUR AND IT WAS SOME TIME BEFORE THEY WERE ABLE TO BRING THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL.

AT THE HEIGHT OF THE FIRE HUGE FLAMES REACHED OUT ACROSS THE RIVER AND SPARKS FROM THE BLAZE IGNITED ONE FIRE ON THE MANHATTAN SIDE OF THE HUDSON RIVER.

IT IS THOUGHT THE FIRE STARTED IN SOME DISUSED CATTLE PENS BUT IT SPREAD RAPIDLY. EIGHT HUNDRED PEOPLE, MOSTLY FIREMEN, POLICE AND COAST GUARDSMEN FOUGHT THE FIRE THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AND WELL INTO THE MORNING. SEVERAL, OVERCOME BY SMOKE AND HEAT, WERE TREATED IN HOSPITAL.

FIRE TENDERS FROM MANY PARTS OF THE NEW YORK CITY AREA RACED TO THE SCENE AND ONE ENGINE, VALUED AT ABOUT GBP10,000 WAS DESTROYED IN THE BLAZE.

JERSEY CITY FIRE DIRECTOR, MR. WILLIAM WOODS SAID YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THAT THE TOTAL DAMAGE WOULD AMOUNT TO "MORE THAN TEN MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP3,570,000)." MR. WOODS ADDED THAT IT WAS ONE OF THE WORST FIRES IN THE CITY'S HISTORY. HE SAID THAT SPORADIC FLARE-UPS AT THE SITE "COULD GO ON FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS."
