  • Description

WALES STAGED A TREMENDOUS LAST MINUTE RALLY TO SNATCH VICTORY FROM ENGLAND IN THEIR RUGBY UNION MATCH AT TWICKENHAM, LONDON, TODAY (SATURDAY 28 FEB.). TRAILING THREE POINTS TO ENGLAND'S 13 AT HALF-TIME WALES FOUGHT BACK TO WIN ONE OF THE MOST THRILLING RUGBY INTERNATIONAL SEEN IN LONDON FOR MANY YEARS.

IN A MAGNIFICENT SECOND HALF - MUCH OF IT WITHOUT THEIR GREAT SKIPPER, GARTH EDWARD - WALES SCORED THREE TRIES, A CONVERSION AND A DROPPED GOAL WHILE HOLDING ENGLAND SCORELESS, TO WIN 17 POINTS TO 13.

THE TRY AND CONVERSION THAT PUT THEM INTO THE LEAD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE MATCH WERE SCORED IN INJURY TIME - AND THEN IN THE FINAL SECONDS THEY ADDED AS DROPPED GOAL.

IT WAS A MAGNIFICENT ENDING TO WHAT HAD BEEN A FAST, SKILFUL AND ALWAYS EXCITING MATCH, PLAYED BEFORE A CROWD OF 65-THOUSAND.

WALES ARE NOW LEVEL WITH FRANCE AT THE TOP OF THE INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE CONTESTED ALSO BY SCOTLAND AND IRELAND.

WALES TOOK POSSESSION FROM THE LINE-OUT, AND FLY HALF BARRY JOHN KICKED DEEP INTO THE ENGLAND HALF... ANOTHER LINE-OUT, AND THIS TIME MERVYN DAVIES TOO THE BALL AND CROSSES THE LINE.

AFTER 24 MINUTES ENGLAND SCORED ANOTHER FINE TRY ... SWEEPING DOWNFIELD AND PASSING AT THE SPLIT SECOND, AND DRAWING THE WALES FULLBACK, FOR JOHN NOVAK, PLAYING IN HIS FIRST MATCH FOR ENGLAND, TO SCORE.

AT HALF-TIME ENGLAND LED 13 TO 3 AND LOOKED AS THOUGH THEY MIGHT DEFEAT WALES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS.

BUT THE SECOND HALF WAS ALL WALES ... A BRILLIANT MOVE FORM SKIPPER GARETH EDWARDS SENT A KICK-AHEAD DOWN THE BLIND SIDE AND BARRY JOHN MADE THE TRY.

SUBSTITUTE SCRUM HALF RAY HOPKINS CANE ON TO REPLACE HIS INJURED SKIPPER AND WAS IMMEDIATELY INSTRUMENTAL IN SCORING A TRY FOR WALES. HIS ASTUTE FLICK TO THE BLIND SIDE AT A SCRUM SAW FULLBACK JOHN WILLIAMS COME CHARGING THROUGH TO SCORE.

TEN MINUTES TO GO AND WALES STILL TRAILED 9 POINTS TO 13 ...

THEN WITH ONLY INJURY TIME LEFT TO PLAY WALES PUT ON THE ELECTRIFYING SPURT THAT GAVE THEM THE GAME... FROM THE LINE-OUT HOPKINS TOOK THE BALL, CUT THROUGH THE DEFENCE AND CRASHED ACROSS THE LINE TO SCORE IN HIS FIRST "CAP" MATCH. WILLIAMS CONVERTED AND WALES WAS AHEAD 14 POINTS TO 13.

IN FRONT FOR THE FIRST TIME WALES FOUND NEW ENERGY AND BARRY JOHN CLINCHED THE GAME WITH A FINE DROPPED GOAL.

THIS WAS THE 75TH TIME ENGLAND AND WALES HAD PLAYED AND THEY ARE NOW LEVEL WITH 32 WINS EACH AND 11 DRAWS... BUT ENGLAND HAVE NOT BEATEN WALES FOR SEVEN YEARS.
