  • Description

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh has paid a four-day official to the Philippines to discuss trade and strengthening relations. He arrived on Friday (6 January) from Kuala Lumpur where he had talks with Malaysian leaders on improving bi-lateral relations.

SYNOPSIS: As the aircraft carrying the Vietnamese foreign minister arrived at Manila airport his opposite number in the Philippines government, Foreign Minister Carlos Romulo, was waiting to greet him. It was the first visit by a Vietnamese foreign minister since the two countries established diplomatic relations in July 1976.

After meeting Filipino officials the Vietnamese minister made a brief statement. He said despite the countries' different social and political systems they could work together -- with good will -- in the interests of peace and prosperity. He added the "new situation" in South-East Asia had improved conditions for developing relations.

According to Reuters News Agency Mr. Trinh's talks with the Philippine foreign minister were likely to include discussions on the regional effect of the Vietnamese-Cambodian border conflict. In an earlier statement Mr. Trinh's deputy, Mr. Vo Dong Giang, called on "brotherly countries" to help reach a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
