    WHILE RESCUE PARTIES IN AUSTRIA TODAY (MONDAY) BEGAN BRINGING DOWN THE BODIES OF 83 PEOPLE KILLED WHEN A BRITISH EAGLE AIRLINER CRASHED INTO A MOUNTAIN PEAK FIVE MILES FROM INNSBRUCK ON SATURDAY; REPORTS WERE COMING IN OF ANOTHER 85 MISSING ABOARD A CONSTELLATION AIRLINER, BELIEVED TO HAVE CRASHED IN A SNOWSTORM IN THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE BRITISH EAGLE AIRLINER IS THOUGHT TO HAVE STRUCK THE GLUNGEZER PEAK ABOUT 65 FEET (19 METRES) FROM THE TOP, AND THEN SLID DOWN THE 70 DEGREE SLOPE OF THE MOUNTAINSIDE, SOME OF THE WRECKAGE COMING TO REST IN A RAVINE BELOW.

    (THE CRASHED PLANE IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN CIRCLING BEFORE COMING INTO LAND AT THE TINY AIRPORT AT INNSBRUCK, FORMERLY A FRENCH OCCUPATION AIRSTRIP, ALMOST PARALLEL TO THE RIVER INN AND BORDERED BY TWO RANGES OF TOWERING MOUNTAINS. IT HAS NO 'BLIND LANDING' FACILITIES.)
