Background: Barricades, burning cars, angry crowds -- almost another Reggio Calabria -- and for the same reasons. The citizens of the central Italian city of L'Aquila broke into violent protest on Saturday (February 27) over the choice of a capital for the mountainous Abruzzi Region.
The disturbances followed the decision of the Regional Council on Friday to divide the functions of capital between L'Aquila and the larger Adriatic port of Pescara. There was a general strike called and the situation appeared to have all the makings of another Reggio as cameraman Pino Giambattista filmed street blazes and general scenes of violent unrest.
