  • Description

GREEK CYPRIOT TRADE AND PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATIONS ORGANISED PICKETS OUTSIDE ALL FOREIGN EMBASSIES IN NICOSIA ON FRIDAY (25 OCTOBER).

THOUSANDS GATHERED AT A CENTRAL POINT THEN DIVIDED INTO SEPARATE GROUPS TO MARCH THROUGH THE STREETS TO THE VARIOUS EMBASSIES. THEY CARRIED ANTI-UNITED STATES PLACARDS AND CHANTED SLOGANS. SOME DEMANDED THE RETURN OF ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, THE DEPOSED PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS.

THE GROUP PICKETING THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY WERE CONFRONTED WITH BARBED WIRE FORTIFICATIONS AND A HEAVY POLICE GUARD. LAST MONTH, THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO CYPRUS, MR. ROGER DAVIES, WAS SHOT DEAD DURING A VIOLENT DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY.

MEANWHILE AT THE LIBYAN EMBASSY, THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE WELCOMED BY THE AMBASSADOR WHO JOINED THEM FOR A WHILE.

SYNOPSIS: PICKET GROUPS ALSO DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE CHINESE AND SYRIAN EMBASSIES, AND THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION. ON THE SAME DAY GREEK CYPRIOT STUDENTS IN NICOSIA DEFIED A GOVERNMENT BAN ON MARCHES AND STAGED AN ANTI-UNITED STATES DEMONSTRATION IN METAXES SQUARE. ABOUT ONE THOUSAND OF THEM LEFT THEIR CLASSROOMS AND PROTESTED AGAINST UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE HENRY KISSINGER, NATO AND THE CIA. THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS A DEBATE ON THE CYPRUS PROBLEM ON MONDAY.
