Background: Forty-four hang gliding pilots from nine countries - including one woman - gathered high above Rio de Janeiro's San Conrado beach in October 10 to take part in the Camel International Hang Gliding challenge. The competition comprised three sections, the mini-cross country, duration and speed tests. The wind was not strong enough for a speed attempt, so the pilots undertook only the duration event. Leading off the first battery of four was the Australian world champion, Steve Mcyes. He was followed by former Brazilian champion, Andre Sansoldo and Chris Bulger, of the United States, the American Masters champion. Bathers on the beach 520 metres (yards) below the take-off ramp scattered as one pilot crash landed. Among those participating were Briton John Pendry, holder of the official world long distance free flight record, and Klaus Kohmsted from Monaco, former European champion.
